| Who are the Two Witnesses found in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 11? |
| The two witnesses are most likely Enoch and Elijah. Both of them are prophets who have never died. The Bible says in Heb 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: " ENOCH The Bible tells us in Genesis 5:24, "And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him." Hebrews 11:5 explains what happened; "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. " ELIJAH Elijah was taken up to heaven in a chariot found in: 2Kings 2:1 "And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind..." 2Kings 2:11 "And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." THE DEATH OF MOSES Some have said that the two witnesses will be Moses and Elijah because the miracles in Revelation 11, look like the miracles that were wrought by Moses back in Egypt. Such reasoning holds no weight FOR WE DO NOT KNOW THE THE MINISTRY OF ENOCH...He could have, by God's power, had the same kind of ministry as Moses.-- the Bible does not tell us. After all, the same God of Moses is the same God of Enoch and all miracles are performed by HIS power. But we WHAT WE DO KNOW from Scripture is that Moses actually died and was buried. The Lord, Himself, told Joshua that Moses is dead: Joshua 1:1-2 "Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel." Deut 34:7 And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated. Deut 34:5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. Because both Enoch and Elijah have not yet died and they are the only ones in the Bible who were uniquely taken or translated from the earth into Heaven, they will be the ones who will reappear in the Tribulation Period. Moses has already died once so he cannot die again. These two men have yet to die and they are very special because God is going to send them to the earth for 3 1/2 years to preach and do many marvelous and awesome signs and wonders: Shutting up heaven, halting the rain, turning waters into blood, countless plagues, fire will proceed out of their mouths. They are going to be hated so much so that the people of the earth will send each other presents for the three days, as the prophets remain dead on the streets. Let's read the verses: Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. Rev 11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. Rev 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Rev 11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. Rev 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. Rev 11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. Rev 11:12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. Notice a few things in verse 9, "the people, kindreds, tongues, nations shall SEE their dead bodies." No other time in history could this be possible except for today. With satellite TV and the internet, people will be able to see this sight from all over the globe. Another interesting thing is that they will SEND each other gifts WITHIN 3 DAYS. Years ago, it took weeks, sometimes months to send a letter. Now, with overnight shipping, one can send gifts within the three day period of time. Also the news must travel fast for it has to arrive within three days-- no other time period would allow for this to happen except for the generation of today. THE TESTIMONY OF TWO WITNESSES: Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. Zech 4:14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth. John 8:17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. Remember Enoch and Elijah are both "witnesses". What does a witness do? He testifies to what he has seen and heard. These two are witnesses to history. It is very possible that these two witnesses were the ones found in the Scriptures below: Luke 24:4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: Acts 1:10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Notice: the Bible does not say "Angels" but "two men." Very interesting indeed! INTERESTING THOUGHTS: Another interesting find of information regarding the Two Witnesses is found in Zechariah, chapter 4 and chapter 5. While one digs deeper into the Scriptures found in Zechariah, an interesting thing is noted: Zec 4:11 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? Zec 4:12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? Zec 4:13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Zec 4:14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth. Zec 5:1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. Zec 5:2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. Zec 5:3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. While this is just a theory, some Bible Prophecy teachers have said that this "flying roll" could be a satellite orbiting the earth. Given the period of time in which these two witnesses appear, it is interesting. Notice the flying roll's dimensions are mentioned right in Scripture. Nothing that is mentioned in the Bible is frivolous. Everything is written for a reason. If you read on in the chapter, you discover an "ephah" mentioned. An ephah was a device used to measure grain and some have speculated that the ephah could represent the satellite dish because an ephah looks like/resembles a satellite dish. Don't know...just a thought. Also the Bible says in Zech 5:6: "And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth." Resemblance? Makes one think. Later in the end of chapter 5, the "Land of Shinar" is mentioned. (See our Bible Study on Babylon being rebuilt in the End Times.)We know that Shinar was the place where the Genesis people started to rebel and built the Tower of Babel, before God confounded their language. Shinar being somewhere in Iraq, east of Israel. It is interesting that immediately following that verse, one reads in Chapter 6 about the chariots that come from behind two mountains and notice the colors of the horses mentioned-- the same colors as the 4 horses of Revelation. Later in chapter 6, "THE BRANCH" is spoken of. No one will dispute these verses talk about the Jewish Messiah-- the Lord Jesus Christ: Zech 6:12-13a "And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne..." Christ Jesus, the Messiah, will set up His earthly kingdom and shall bear the glory and shall sit and rule upon His Throne. He shall be a Priest upon His Throne. Wow!! For the rest of the verses in Zechariah mentioning the flying roll and ephah above, they are just some interesting observations and theories but one will not know exactly what all those verses mean until they are fulfilled.
