We will not see the movie, "One Night With The King". To attend the film would be supporting Tommy Tenney, of whom we shall discuss briefly below. To attend this film would mean supporting the entire cast who appear in the film. Matt Crouch has repeatedly said that he wants to bring the church into the world. Yet the Lord Jesus told us that His Kingdom was not of this world and we are admonished in the epistles to be separate from the world. We, as Christians, are in the world but should not be of the world.
Our Lord commanded us to preach the Gospel to every creature-- the message that Jesus Christ died to save us from our sins. That is our mission. We are also told in Scripture to be on guard against false doctrines that creep into the Church-- And so we present this article. Please understand that we have nothing against Tommy Tenney personally, nor do we have anything personal against the Crouch's of TBN but we do believe that they are presenting false doctrine, as with the sermons and books of Tommy Tenney, who is a co-producer of the film. (Mr. Tenney has been traveling all over the country promoting the film and his ideas of Esther and how it relates to the Church. Mr. Tenney also comes from a "Pentecostal Oneness" background. The same denomination that denies the Trinity.)
When researching the film and reading the IMDB website, to our shock, the leading man, Luke Goss, who plays King Xerxes, starred in a film in 2005 called, "Private Moments". According to one person from the UK, who rated it, the movie was "rubbish. Its nothing short of a soft core porn movie."
Tiffany Dupont, who plays Esther in the film, stars in the TV series, "The Bedford Diaries". According to one secular viewer of her the show, "The premise for this show catches viewers' attention with its promise of an intricate and well-intentioned (if not somewhat self-indulgent) look into the sexual fabric of an upscale college campus. What it delivers is a well-plotted, insightful, and amusing side-glance into the emotional psyche of human sexuality in any capacity." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460626/usercomments
Now, let's say a Christian mom takes her 10 year old to see the movie. The child loves the film and then wants to see other movies and TV shows that these actors have played in. It happens all the time. Seeing the film, OPENS the door for secular movies and TV shows to come into your house. Your kids have been introduced to these secular actors and there is no turning back.
According to TBN's website, the movie "One Night With The King is rich with mystical allure, suspense, intrigue, and political intrigue within unparalleled drama. It's an unforgettable love story set in a world of adventure and it appeals to people of all faiths." http://www.tbn.org/index.php/7.html?nid=150
Of course it will appeal to people of all faiths! Could we expect anything different from ecumenical TBN? According to many people who have reviewed the film online, it strays away from the TRUE Biblical account and although "inspiring" to some, many others felt it was a bit lascivious and sensual for Christian viewers, especially young children and that it was not as the biblical text.
On reviewer wrote the following on Christiananswers.net: Negative- I saw the movie, but it is not Biblically accurate, but most 'Hollywood Type' movies are never Biblically accurate. They take too much 'artistic liberties' to make them 'more' or ' so called' interesting. Well, because many people don't ever (or very rarely) read the Bible anyway, they will never get the true story and be decieved unless they study. 'Hollywood Type' movies put a vision in people’s heads, and they are really deceived and take it as scripture. Please, whoever reads this, I will tell you now to study, study, study the Bible before you take movies as scripture and tell your children, family and friends so they are not decieved. —Travis, age 22.

Negative - One thought that was in my mind as soon as I saw the trailer for this was “please get this one right, without Hollywood elements After going to see the film, I was sorely dissapointed to see that this was not the Esther of the Bible account. Here are some examples: Mordecai's involvement in the account was played back, and the most significant line that was spoken by him in the Bible was given to a fictional character instead. Giving Esther a fictional love interest aside from the king should have not been in this film at all. It did not happen! When it comes to her and the king's relationship, the Bible account is less Romeo and Juliet. The star of David symbol pendant, that was unneeded. My history is not that good, but I don't even think the Jews used that symbol for themselves until Israel was recognized a state thousands of years later. There is more I can't think of at this moment, so I will end by saying I do not recommend this film for believers. Too many Hollywood embelishments, bad dialogue in some spots. Read the Bible account. It is much better. —Andrew Lopez, age 24
A problem with the movie could be the actual source of the story. It is not based upon the Book of Esther found in the Holy Bible, but rather upon Tommy Tenney's novel, "Hadassah: One Night With The King". The same Tommy Tenney who comes from Pentecostal Oneness roots and who receives unbiblical "revelations" from God. (Pentecostal Oneness denies the Trinity.) The same Tommy Tenney who encourages folks to go beyond the bible into fresh "revelation" and "experience". Clearly the bible warns us to "earnestly contend for the faith" and not to be swayed by every wind of doctrine. Tenney's false teachings are clearly documented in the quotes and links below.
In TBN's newsletter, March 2005, Paul and Jan wrote of Tommy Tenney's book, "Finding Favor With The King":
"Hidden among the secrets of a heathen king's palace is an encoded mystery of Bible purpose-- access to God's very presence! Yes, the book of Esther literally shows us an incredible road map to God!"
Most scholars would say that the Book of Esther shows the Divine providence of God in preserving His people in a heathen land. It was He, who placed it upon the King of Persia to marry Esther. It was He, who gave courage to Esther to come before the king. It was God alone who placed it within the king to stretch forth his scepter to Esther. GOD!-- He alone can do the impossible in impossible circumstances. What can man do if God does not deem it so?
Let's briefly touch on "Finding Favor" with the King and the "roadmap to God". As Christians, we will never be favored more than we are this minute. The favor of God DOES NOT come with what we do but rather WHOM WE HAVE RECEIVED. When our Heavenly Father looks upon us, He sees His beloved Son! We are IN CHRIST and that is where He sees us. We do not come to Him with our works. We do not need to "dress up" for the King with rituals. Never is the Church to be viewed as Esther when she is approaching her husband in uncertainty. We, as the Redeemed of the Lord, may come BOLDLY into His presence without FEAR OR RESERVATION. We cannot find favor from God by doing anything. Our works are a result of His Spirit working HIS work on the inside of us. We cannot glory in our good deeds. We are in Christ...we are HIS PEOPLE...AND HE IS OUR KING! Favor came and rests with us the day we received Christ and the ONLY viewpoint God has by looking at us is through His beloved Son!
Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Simple and FUNDAMENTAL theology!
It is the Lord Jesus who had favor with God and man. Seeing we are in Christ, we too have already the favor of God because we have received HIS SON.
Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
The whole "One Night With The King" concept, from my observation so far, is trying to spiritualize Esther as the Church, who must approach the King with caution and try to find favor with the King. Such is truly false teaching for the Bride of Christ. We may come to God anytime. Hebrews 4:14-16 says: Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
AND THERE IS NO NIGHT WITH THE KING...ONLY DAY! When our life is through on earth, night will cease. There is no night in Heaven. The Bible says that Faith pleases God. We don't need to chase God, for the Spirit of God lives within us. If we ask according to His will, He hears us.
1John 3:22-23 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
1John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
Faithful is the Lord who empowers us to do His will. When we pray, we find strength and guidance. We don't need to try and devise ways to find favor with Him. We are already loved in His sight. We already have a spiritual inheritance. We are His instruments. As we yield to Him, we find His will is performed in our lives. Doesn't matter how much you ask for something, if is not His will, you will not receive it. The Lord only gives GOOD gifts to His children. Those things that are not needed in our lives will not be given...those things that would cause us harm are not given. We are IN CHRIST and when the Father looks at us, He sees His Dear Son!
Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Tit 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
1John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
"One Night With The King" is a very carnal title that caters to the carnal man, with worldly desires. We, as the Church, understand that our walk with Jesus is in the light. We walk in the Light-- for Jesus is the Light.
The Lord Jesus said, "Without Me ye can do nothing." So then how can a saved Christian do anything to find more favor with the King? Everything we have and are is because of Jesus! Everything fruitful that we do is because of His Spirit, which empowers us for holy living. We love Him because He first loved us. Christ is the Vine, we are the branches. As we have stated in another article, a Christian is joined to Christ Jesus and thus produces fruit. We cannot produce any fruit on our own, apart from Christ. The more that we yield to God, the more fruit is produced.
J. Vernon McGee's wrote: [The Lord Jesus] "He wants to live His life through us. That is the reason I keep saying that you are never asked to live the Christian life. You are asked to let Him live through you. No believer can live the Christian life himself. The old nature cannot produce the fruit of the Spirit...but how are we going to let the Spirit of God produce the fruit of the Spirit in our lives?....We are to abide in Christ if we are to produce fruit...The fruit is produced by yielding...We are to yield to the Holy Spirit who indwells us. The Holy Spirit wants to produce fruit--it is called the fruit of the Spirit..."
Rom 8:31-39 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1Cor 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
MOLDY PAGES?
In his book, The God Chasers, Tenney presumably speaks of reading the Bible as "the moldy pages of what God has done."
"I don't care how much you know about the Bible, or what you know about Him. I'm afraid we have satiated our hunger for Him by reading old love letters from Him to the churches in the epistles of the New Testament. These are good, holy and necessary, but we never have intimacy with Him." (p. 15).
Could it be that Tenney's quest to find favor with the king stems from the his dangerous view of the Holy Scriptures? That they are "past truth" and "moldy pages"? Could it be that he seeks favor by means of "works" because he does not understand the biblical precept of being "IN CHRIST"? Or maybe it is because he does not understand the doctrine of the Trinity, in which the Heavenly Father sees the Believer exclusively in His Son and where the Holy Spirit abides in the Believer? Favor is ours because we abide in the Vine.
TENNEY'S PANTHEISTIC VIEW OF GOD
In The God Chasers, Tenney wrote that God is that “particle in the atomic nucleus that nuclear physicists cannot see and can only track….God is everywhere in everything. He is the composite of everything, both the glue that holds the pieces of the universe together and the pieces themselves! This explains why people can sit on a barstool in an inebriated state and suddenly feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit without the benefit of a preacher, gospel music, or any other Christian influence. God is literally right there in the bar with them….(see page 36)
2Cor 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
To attend the film means you are supporting the heresy of what Tenney believes in and stands for. Matt and Laurie have said numerous times that they desire to bring the Church into the world and they are doing a good job of it so far...question is...how far do they want to take the "church"?
We see that worldliness is definitely in "churchianity" but the Bible specifically says in 2Cor 6:17: Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
1John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
