Proverbs 23:9  Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the
wisdom of thy words.

Provebs 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like
unto him.

There has been much press in recent weeks concerning atheism. A few nights
ago, a very popular Christian celebrity took the stage to debate with atheists. On
the surface, this may seem like a grand idea but what does debating with fools
profit?

Psalm 14:1
<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.> The fool hath said in
his heart, There is no God.
They are corrupt, they have done abominable
works, there is none that doeth good.

How can a born-again Christian reason with a person whom the bible calls a
fool? Popular evangelists are trying to debate with atheists on the existence of
God ... But does God call the Christian to debate with foolishness? The Lord
Jesus told us not to cast our pearls to swine. A hard-line atheist is a fool. In
spite of all creation that surrounds him and all the evidence of an intelligent
Grand Designer of it all, he "sticks to his guns," and states..."There is no God."
Such a man is foolish and blind.

Now, there is a difference between the atheist and the agnostic. An atheist is his
own god. He does not believe in anything higher than himself. There is hope for
the agnostic -- because at least he says, "I don't know." The atheist says, "I
know" and with proud arrogance refuses to see. Usually the agnostic has many
questions for the Christian to answer and we should be prepared to answer their
questions. Many times, agnostics are seeking the truth and are receptive to the
truth (if properly presented); and as they humble themselves, they receive the
grace to believe.

1 Peter 5:5 says,
"for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."

A short time ago, we had a repairman in our home and he told me that he was
an "atheist" but then quickly changed his title to an "agnostic" and said that he
didn't know if God existed. About 5 minutes into the conversation, I could see
he was thinking about the things I was telling him and that he was seeking the
truth. I answered his questions and walked him through what the bible says
concerning the prophecies Jesus fulfilled. By the end of the conversation, he was
asking me for prayer and told me that he would read the Bible and I told him to
pray to his Creator for truth. Once a person acknowledges the existence of God,
he can then be shown the truth, as he humbles himself before God. A person
who is shown the plain truth, and receives it, is
not a fool. This repairman didn't
know until someone showed him and he responded wisely to the evidence
supporting the existence of God; and the
Old Testament prophecies and
fulfillment concerning the Lord Jesus Christ as the prophesied Messiah.

A fool is one, despite all the evidence and all the dialogue still goes on in his own
mind to refuse the truth. The fire will burn them, whether they believe it or not.
The earth is round, whether they believe it or not. Their beliefs do not obliterate
God's existence and in the end, they will know the truth but it will be too late.

Romans 1:20
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are
clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse...

Yes, creation itself testifies that there is a God! Yet some "experts" disagree.
They believe that creation in all of its splendor and intricate detail simply
"evolved." You look at any building-- any structure whether it is simple or
ornate and you know that an architect designed it and workers carried the plans
out. Yet "experts" cannot see the Architect behind the delicate flower. Such
beauty is not by chance. Everything beautiful in this world was created by
someone. And everything that God created has its own purpose and function.

Buildings are not erected of their own accord. Someone had to build them. You
can throw bricks, rocks, cement and steel into a pit but you will never get a
building from it. It will sit in the pit for eternity and never evolve into a building.
Yet that is what the "experts" have said concerning the creation -- the majesty
that surrounds us.

Many Christians choose to debate with fools because they feel they can reason
with them. They may even cite Acts 17:23, where Paul preached to the people
of Athens concerning the "unknown God." But we must remember that the
people of Athens, being idolatrous, were not atheists. They still believed in many
gods and even believed in the unknown God...they just did not know who He
was.

Elijah contended with the prophets of Baal but those false prophets still believed
there was a God-- they just did not believe in the One and True God until God's
power was displayed before their eyes. Nineveh was most wicked and God sent
the prophet Jonah to preach to them. They believed and repented. But there is
no hope for the atheist, who through strong will and hardened heart, refuses to
know the truth. Can we open his eyes? Do we have the power to do so?...
when atheists reject their own Creator? We cannot. Only as the atheist humbles
himself can the Almighty God reveal Himself.

Creation testifies that there is a God! Before creation, God is, was and will
always be. His hand is seen in all of creation and if one refuses to see, we must
declare such folks to be wilfully blind. God has given them over to a reprobate
mind. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. The atheist answers
to himself; and lives his own life while upon this earth but he cannot guarantee
his eternal future-- he has no hope and believes he descended from slime. How
sad it is that on earth he refuses to see and once in hell, it will be too late. How
tragic the end shall be. Blind while living and cast into outer darkness when
deceased. How we long for them to see the truth before it is too late but
Christian debates with them profit nothing. It's like trying to show a blind person
the road ahead of them. It simply is impossible. They cannot see and will never
see until they humble themselves before God and pray, "God, if you are there,
please reveal yourself to me. I want to know the truth."

Our duty as Christians is to share the Gospel message-- fulfill the Great
Commission-- share the love of Jesus with a lost and dying world. The Lord
Jesus said in Mark 16:16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;
but he that believeth not shall be damned.
The Gospel is to be preached--
"
for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew
first, and also to the Greek" (Romans 1:16).
Wasting time debating with fools is
not our commission. Reaching souls for Christ is-- and the only way a person is
saved is by receiving Christ as Savior. Let's stay on track and remain focused.
We are called to PROCLAIM, not debate.

Debating With Atheists?
